Storm Sandy
United States
-
31 Oct 12
The devastating Storm Sandy that has hit parts of the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States has claimed well over 100 lives across the area and left millions without power. Haiti is facing severe food shortages as 70% of crops have been destroyed by the storm, and US farmers will also undoubtedly be affected.
Many American delegates at Slow Food’s event Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, which concluded on Monday, are stuck in Turin and unable to return home due to the closure of international airports in the region. We have been reassured that the families and friends of staff from Slow Food USA’s office in New York are safe.
Slow Food is active in many of these areas with a number of friends and convivia. Slow Food USA has dozens of local chapters across the northeast, with 13 in New York State alone. We would like to express our solidarity with those suffering through the disaster.
